Things to do in Ayrshire
There is so much to explore in this part of the world it can be difficult to decide what to do first!
Largs is a busy town with many shops, cafes and restaurants. The Viking Festival is held for a week at the end of August/beginning of September each year. Largs Yacht Haven at the south end of the town is a vibrant sailing centre and Kelburn Country Centre is close by, as is Largs Golf Club. Located at the North end of the town, Routenburn Golf Club is a hilly course, but the views are spectacular from the top! Take a trip on board the ocean going Paddle Steamer Waverley during July and August for a truly memorable day.
Cumbrae is a popular island to visit and is ten minutes by ferry from Largs. Bicycle and tandem hire is available for the 11 mile round trip. The golf course boasts stunning views. The Cathedral of the Isles, in the town of Millport, is the smallest cathedral in Great Britian. Cumbrae Voyages offer the chance of a trip in a RIB to see the wildlife around Wee Cumbrae.
Mount Stuart, home of the Marquis of Bute, on the Island of Bute is a treasure filled house and wonderful garden worthy of a visit. Arran, the largest island, has Brodick Castle at the foot of Goat Fell and the distillery at Loch Ranza in the north. Closer to Ayr lies Culzean Castle, Burns country and the famous Open Golf courses at Troon and Turnberry.
A visit to the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar and Inveraray Castle along with the fascinating restored 19th century Inveraray Jail, would make a great day out and for those who like some culture, there are a number of excellent Art Galleries and Museums in Glasgow. North of the river, the gardens at Benmore near Dunoon are a lovely spot, as are Loch Lomond and The Trossachs beyond.
